What is pearl extract (nacre), and how is it obtained?

Nacre, also called mother-of-pearl, is the iridescent inner layer certain molluscs build inside their own shells: microscopic calcium carbonate (aragonite) platelets, stacked in thin layers and bound with a natural protein, in a "brick and mortar" structure. That layering is what gives nacre its soft luminosity inside the shell, long before any cosmetic use.

For cosmetics, this material is refined into a fine extract that retains trace minerals and the same layered structure. What is mica, really?

Mica is a naturally occurring silicate mineral, mined from rock deposits, valued in cosmetics because it splits into extremely thin, flat, translucent sheets. Raw mined mica is mostly pale; the gold, bronze or pink tones seen in most products come from a thin coating of metal oxides — commonly titanium dioxide or iron oxides — fused onto the platelet afterwards.

As a mineral rather than an animal or plastic ingredient, mica sits comfortably in a vegan routine, and it is the workhorse of the shimmer world: highlighters, eyeshadows and foundations lean on it long before any glitter is added.

What is synthetic glitter — and why does "microplastic" come up?

Synthetic glitter is manufactured, not mined or extracted: a thin metallic layer bonded between sheets of PET plastic film, then precision-cut into uniform particles — hexagons, squares, tiny stars — all identical in size and shape. That mechanical uniformity is part of what makes glitter read as glitter rather than natural shimmer.

Because the base material is plastic, loose glitter or glitter that washes off skin behaves like other plastic fragments once it reaches water: it does not biodegrade, and it is hard to filter back out. Makeup highlighter vs a leave-on care product — not the same job
